THE SHARDS
By Joshua Lindquist - (scroll around page to view work)
When I first began making the shards, it came as a happy accident. I was
mainly interested in experimenting with wood kiln building. I threw old
bottles, marbles, beer cans and any kind of junk glass into the kilns I built
testing to see how well they would work, how high they would fire. After
building over 10 kilns and firing each one at least 2-5 times, many of the
melted glass pieces that at first seemed like trinkets began catching my eye.
I would chip here, grind there, and eventually I came upon my own voice making
these small glass sculptures. The shards are miniatures. They're
made out of tough glass like Pyrex and optical glass. The things that
occur in the kiln during firing create the most interest. Aluminum fusing
to a glass surface creates an interesting pattern. A cracked piece of glass
reveals an obsidian-like surface. Slumped glass over previously fired
shards creates new combinations.
